SHANA SALAFF: GLAZES I USE

GENERAL NOTES: I use Laguna B mix 5 clay. I fire to cone 5 oxidation with a cooling down ramp to prevent pinholing. Bisque to 04.

I add liquid cmc gum to all my handmade glazes to improve brushability and to make the glaze stick to the pot better before firing.

All glazes here are good for brushing except the Bates clear: that really needs to be dipped/poured.

My Favorite Glazes:

Wills Crackle Base

Neph Sy 24

Lithium Carb 13

Whiting 3

Strontium Carb 23

Ball Clay 3

Silica 31

Bentonite 3

100

Add:

Silica 5

1) Wills Saturated

Copper Carb 10%

Chrome Oxide 1%

2) Wills Chartreuse

Chrome Oxide .5%

3) Wills Turquoise

Copper Carb 4%

Notes:

These glazes run a LOT!

I use the “Wills Saturated” for inlay into carved lines and for trailing. Mucho fuming!

I make my diamonds by trailing the exterior shape with the “Wills Saturated” and then I brush a medium (not too thick, but not thin) layer of “Wills Chartreuse” inside.

The turquoise has been shivering off edges of my cone 5 B-mix recently. Put a thin layer of clear overtop if using on handles, spouts, or edges. Maybe add a bit more silica to make it a better glass, or research ways to reduce glaze expansion.

I’ve also made a lavender with addition of cobalt based lavender stain and a bit of extra frit. Might be nice with other colors too but will definitely burn out chrome-tin pinks.

RS Matte:

Neph Sy 60

Strontium Carb 22

Ball Clay 8

Lithium Carb 5

Silica 5

100

Add:

3124 2%

Bentonite 3%

1) Copper Matte

Copper Carb 2%

2) Chrome Matte

Chrome Oxide .5%

Notes:

Gorgeous matte glaze. Great for handles and rims. Brush on in 2.5 layers, changing directions each time. Darker when thick, light blue to white where thin.

Not food safe, Fairly runny.

Liner glazes:

Bates Clear Base

Neph Sy 35

Silica 24

Wollastonite 14

Strontium Carb 14

Gerstley Borate 9

EPK 9

100

Add:

Silica 5%

Bentonite 3%

Purple

Wollastonite 5%

Frit 3124 5%

MS 6385 (Pansy Purple) 8%

Dark Blue

Cobalt Carb 1-2%

Green

Copper Carb 2%

Notes:

This is a beautiful rich clear glaze that takes colors very well, including chrome-tin pinks/reds. Add Wollastonite 5-10% to those containing chrome-tins in addition to the stain (as per Purple above).

You might need to add 5% 3124 frit to other colors as well as the Purple, especially if firing to cone 5 instead of 6.

Excellent liner glaze! On the edge of crazing usually. Highlights surface texture and shows brush strokes

Can use for dinner ware. Stays put!

Glazes I use Occcasionally

VC Matte:

Neph Sy 40

EPK 10

Silica 14

Gerstley Borate 10

Lithium Carb 8

Whiting 8

Titanium 10

100

Notes:

Gorgeous glaze! Pink when thick and brownish when thinner. Reacts to chrome by blushing hard.

Wills Clouded Blue:

Neph Sy 36

Whiting 14

Talc 9

Tin 9

Gerstley Borate 10

Grolleg 14

Silica 9

Soda Ash 15

Betonite 3

Copper Carb 2

Notes:

Make in small batches because the soda ash tends to get weird if stored too long.

Very contractive glaze – use on the whole pot or just in small bits.

Absolutely gorgeous with Wills glazes on top, especially the Chartreuse!
